Introduction and acceptance of terms
These Terms & Conditions ("Terms") apply to your use of the Mauritius Gymkhana Club website, including its booking, reservation, enquiry and application forms and its chat assistant. By using the website you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.
Please read them together with our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal data, and, if you are a member or a guest, with the Club's Rules & Bye-Laws, which govern the use of the Club's premises and facilities. If these Terms and the Rules & Bye-Laws differ on a matter concerning the Club's premises, facilities or membership, the Rules & Bye-Laws prevail.
If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must send any application or request on your behalf.

About the Mauritius Gymkhana Club
The Mauritius Gymkhana Club, established in 1849, is a private members' club in Vacoas, Mauritius, formed to further and enhance the well-being of its members. It is governed by its Rules & Bye-Laws and by the laws of Mauritius.
Use of the Club's premises is restricted to Members and their invited Guests, and to Visitors where the Rules & Bye-Laws or the Club allow it. The Club's facilities are not made available to the general public or to non-member groups without the express authorisation of the Executive Committee. Opening hours differ between facilities and are shown on the Website, for example on the Contact page and on each sport's page.
Website use
You may use the Website for lawful purposes only: to find information about the Club and to send genuine enquiries, Booking Requests and applications. You must not:
- give false or misleading information, or use another person's identity or membership code;
- send a request for someone else without being authorised to do so;
- use bots, scrapers or other automated means to send forms or collect content, or try to get around the Website's rate limits and other security measures;
- try to reach the administration area, which is for authorised Club staff only, or any data that is not yours;
- upload files that are unlawful, infected with malware or not asked for by the form; or
- use the chat assistant to produce abusive or unlawful content or to try to extract confidential information.
We may refuse or cancel a request, or block access to the Website, if we believe these Terms have been broken or the Website is being misused. We may report unlawful activity to the authorities.
Membership applications
Membership is a privilege, not a right. Sending an online application asks the Club to consider you for membership; it does not make you a Member and does not oblige the Club to admit you.
- Applications follow the process in the Rules & Bye-Laws: the prescribed application form (the online forms are that form), the required documents, and the support of a proposer and a seconder who are Members. The steps are summarised on the Membership page.
- The Executive Committee reviews each application and has full powers and absolute discretion to accept or reject it. It does not have to give a reason.
- The Club considers every candidate strictly on merit, without distinction on account of religion, sexual orientation, origin or race.
- You must give complete and accurate information and documents. If a statement in your application is later found to be incorrect in a material respect, or something material was left out, the Executive Committee may cancel your election, and you are then not entitled to a refund of any entrance fee, subscription or other charge you paid.
- Entrance fees, subscriptions, payment plans and the conditions on which fees are refunded are set out in the Rules & Bye-Laws and confirmed to you during the application process.
- By sending an application you confirm that you have read the Rules & Bye-Laws and agree to be bound by them if you are admitted.
Sports facilities and activities
The Club offers sports and leisure facilities, such as golf, grass tennis, squash, padel, five-a-side football, a gym, a swimming pool and studio classes, to Members and their Guests and, where the Club allows it, to Visitors. What each facility offers, its hours and its rates are shown on its page of the Website and can change. The Executive Committee and the General Manager set the hours of operation and the fees for each facility or service.
- Rules of use. Conduct, dress code, children's access, etiquette and the rules of each facility are set out in the Rules & Bye-Laws and on notices at the Club. By using a facility you agree to follow them and the instructions of Club staff.
- Opening and closing. The Club Manager (and, for golf, the Golf Manager) decides when facilities open and close. A facility may be closed, restricted or reserved at short notice, for example because of weather, maintenance, a competition or an event. Except in an emergency, Members are told in advance of a closure.
- Your own risk. Members and their Guests use the facilities at their own risk. Please make sure you are fit to take part, and supervise any children you bring. Members are responsible for damage caused by them, their families and their Guests, and it is charged to them.
- Property. The Club is not responsible for the loss of, or damage to, the belongings of Members or Guests, including valuables, clothing, golf bags and clubs, cars and motorcycles. Club property must not be removed from the premises.
Nothing in these Terms limits the Club's liability where the law does not allow it (see Disclaimers and limitation of liability).
Court and sports booking requests
You can use the Website to ask to book a tee time, court, pitch, gym or pool session, or a place in a studio class. A Booking Request is a request, not a confirmed booking.
- Give accurate contact details, so that we can reach you about your request.
- Say whether you are a Member, in which case the form asks for your membership code, or a Visitor.
- Choose from the times the form offers. They are in Mauritius time and fall within the facility's booking hours. For golf, the time you choose is your preferred tee time, and the Caddy Master confirms your exact time. For tennis, padel and football you may ask for several one-hour slots in one request.
- Some facilities must be booked a set time ahead. The lead time is shown on the facility's page and in the form.
- The form asks you to agree to the club rules, notices and dress code before you send it.
We may refuse or cancel a request that contains false information, such as a membership code that is not valid. The rates shown on the Website are those in force when they were published. They can change, and Members, Guests and Visitors may pay different rates.
Booking availability and confirmation
- Every Booking Request depends on availability. The Club may decline it, or propose another date, time or facility.
- A booking exists only when the Club confirms it, by email, by telephone or in person. The automatic email you receive when you send a request only acknowledges it.
- The response times shown on the Website, for example when we say we will confirm availability or reply within a number of hours or working days, are targets, not guarantees. If you have heard nothing within that time, please contact the relevant desk through the Contact page.
- Online table reservations are for Members only. The form asks for your membership code, and a table is confirmed only when Reception confirms it.
Booking changes and cancellations
To change or cancel a booking, tell the Club as early as you can: reply to your confirmation email, call the Caddy Master for golf (+230 698 6302) or the front desk for anything else (+230 660 1844), or email info@mgc.mu.
- Notice. Cancellation rules are published on each facility's page. Where a rule applies, for example squash, padel and the five-a-side football pitch, you must cancel at least 24 hours before your slot; later cancellations and no-shows are billed at the standard rate. Where no rule is published, please give as much notice as you can.
- Changes. A change of date, time or number of players is a new request: it depends on availability and must be confirmed like the original.
- Changes by the Club. We may have to cancel or move a booking because of weather, maintenance, a competition, an event or safety. Studio classes and outdoor sessions can also change with the weather or the instructor's availability. We will tell you as early as we can and, where possible, offer another time.
- Tables, events and venue hire. Please tell Reception as soon as your plans change so that the table can be released. Changes and cancellations for venue hire follow the terms of the proposal the Club confirms to you.
Guest and visitor access
The Club is a Members' place. Members are welcome to bring Guests, but a Guest may use the Club only when accompanied by a Member.
- A Member must register each Guest at the Reception Desk or the sporting outlet, and sign them into the Guest's Book, before the Guest uses any facility, and must stay with the Guest throughout. Anyone who is not registered may be refused entry or service and asked to leave.
- Guests must follow the same rules and dress code as Members. The Member who registers a Guest is responsible for their conduct, and any expense a Guest runs up is charged to that Member.
- Limits apply to how often a Guest may take part in a sport, and some people cannot introduce Guests at all, for example Temporary Members. Suspended or terminated Members, and anyone declared ineligible for membership, cannot be introduced as Guests. The Rules & Bye-Laws give the details for each facility.
- Visitors. Some facilities are open to Visitors by prior reservation or on payment of a fee. For example, a visiting golfer pays the Visitor's Green Fee and is accompanied by a caddy, and studio classes welcome Visitors who have reserved. Days, times and other conditions are set out in the Rules & Bye-Laws and on each facility's page. The Club may refuse a Visitor's request, or ask a Visitor to leave, if the rules are not followed.
- Reciprocal clubs. Members of affiliated clubs who visit Mauritius are welcome on presentation of a valid member card and a letter from their home club. See the Reciprocal clubs page.
Events and venue hire
The Club's event spaces can be hired for private and corporate events; the current spaces are listed on the Venue hire page. Capacities and equipment vary with the set-up, and the events team confirms the details for your event.
- A venue hire enquiry asks for a proposal; it is not a booking. A venue is reserved only when the Club confirms it, on the terms of its proposal. The time the events team gives for its reply is a target, not a guarantee.
- Hire is subject to the Club's approval and to the Rules & Bye-Laws, which provide that the Club's facilities are not made available to the general public or to non-member groups without the express authorisation of the Executive Committee.
- Whoever hires a venue is responsible for the conduct of their guests and for any damage they or their guests cause, which is charged to them, and for keeping to the Club's rules, including its dress code and smoking rules. They must also obtain any permit or licence the event needs.
- Food and drink are supplied by the Club unless the Club Manager agrees otherwise. Wine and liquor may be served with a pre-arranged corkage fee.
- Events listed on the Events page are published for information. Dates, times and arrangements can change, and some events are for Members and their invited Guests only. Please check with the events team.
Restaurant and dining services
The Club's restaurants and bars serve Members and their Guests. Opening hours, menus and prices are shown on the Dining page and can change; the menu of the day is set each week.
- Reservations. Online table reservations are for Members only, and the form asks for your membership code. A reservation request is not a confirmed table: Reception confirms it, which we aim to do within 24 hours, by telephone or email.
- Allergies and diets. Please tell your server about any dietary requirement or allergy when you order. Our kitchens handle a range of ingredients, so we cannot guarantee that a dish is free of a particular allergen.
- House rules. The Rules & Bye-Laws apply in the dining areas and bars. For example: food and drink consumed on the premises must be bought from the Club, unless the Club Manager agrees otherwise; smoking is not permitted in the Main Hall and Dining Area; mobile phones and laptops may not be used in the dining area; staff may not be tipped; alcohol is not served to anyone under 18 or who appears intoxicated; children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult; and anyone under 18 may not sit at the bar.
Website content and accuracy
We work to keep the Website accurate and up to date, including opening hours, rates, class timetables, menus, events and news, but this information can change without notice and may contain mistakes. It is provided for general information. Please confirm anything you rely on, such as a rate, a time or availability, with the Club first.
- The Rules page shows the Rules & Bye-Laws as currently in force. If you are unsure how a rule applies to you, contact the office.
- The chat assistant is automated and uses artificial intelligence. It can make mistakes, it cannot make bookings or promises on the Club's behalf, and it does not replace the Rules & Bye-Laws or the advice of Club staff. Please check anything important with the Club.
- Photographs and descriptions are illustrative.
Intellectual property rights
The Website and its content, including the text, the Club's name and emblem, photographs, graphics, layout and software, belong to the Club or are used with permission, and are protected by intellectual property laws. Some images, such as certain photographs on sport pages, are supplied by third parties under their own licences and remain their property.
You may view the Website, and print or download extracts for your own personal, non-commercial use. You may not copy, republish, distribute, modify or exploit the content commercially, or use the Club's name or emblem, without our prior written consent.
If you send us content, such as a message, photograph or document, you keep your rights in it and allow us to use it to deal with your request, as explained in the Privacy Policy.
The Website was designed and developed by Visylo Consulting. If you believe content on the Website infringes your rights, please contact us.
Disclaimers and limitation of liability
- The Website is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that it will always be available or free of errors, and we may change, suspend or withdraw any part of it.
- As far as the law allows, the Club is not liable for loss or damage arising from your use of the Website, from relying on its content or on the chat assistant's replies, or from a booking, class or event being changed or cancelled, including indirect or consequential loss and costs you incur as a result.
- Use of the Club's facilities is subject to the provisions on risk and property in the section on sports facilities and in the Rules & Bye-Laws.
- Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law.
Privacy and third-party links
How we collect and use personal data, including the cookies the Website uses, is explained in our Privacy Policy.
The Website links to other sites and services, such as social media, WhatsApp, the websites of reciprocal clubs and the map provider. We do not control them, a link is not an endorsement, and we are not responsible for their content or practices. Their own terms and privacy policies apply once you follow a link.
Governing law and disputes
These Terms, and any dispute arising out of them or out of your use of the Website, are governed by the laws of the Republic of Mauritius, and the courts of Mauritius have jurisdiction. This does not affect any mandatory rights you may have under the law that applies to you.
For Members, the Rules & Bye-Laws set out the Club's own procedures for complaints and discipline, which apply in addition to these Terms.
Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms, for example when our services change or the law requires. The current version is always on this page, with its date at the top, and by continuing to use the Website after a change you accept the updated Terms. Changes to the Rules & Bye-Laws follow the procedure set out in those Rules.
